Mario – The Original Gaming Addiction
If you were around during the early 1980s then the game Mario Bros has a special spot in your memory. The game, developed by Nintendo, literally changed the landscape of arcade gaming, merchandising and the way people looking at video games. Since its introduction there has been countless Mario games added to the line-up on a regular basis and has managed to keep a loyal and solid fan base spanning generations which is no small feat!
For many people just the mere mention of Mario Bros. takes them back in time to when they were young, without any worries or stress and just feeling that initial excitement and enjoyment while playing the iconic game.
Mario Bros. – A History in the Making
The original game was actually introduced following the famed “video game crash” of 1983, yet even that couldn’t affect sales in North America.
The whole premise behind Mario Bros. is that it follows Mario, an Italian-American plumber and his brother Luigi fighting creatures that are escaping from New York sewers. Of course over the years a number of other games were developed, such as Super Mario Bros. each with their own storylines but keeping in tact the characters of Mario and Luigi.
Nintendo even has a whole page dedicated to all the various Mario games on each of the different platforms such as the Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS. For those die-hard fans that now own a Wii, they have the option of downloading the original version of Mario Bros. through the Wii store. Talk about a time warp! Sure the graphics are out-dated, the story weak and the music nothing short of predictable but those are all the reasons people still love the franchise!
A Creation of a Fan Base
Mario Bros. created a massive fan base and not just any fan base but one that was loyal and almost rabid to get their hands on anything Mario related. The games and the merchandise flew off the shelves and continues to do so almost 30 years later! It’s incredible when you think about it.
If you scroll through video game history you’ll quickly find that there has never been a character as popular and as loved as Mario. His look hasn’t changed through the years making him recognizable by all. It’s funny because as a character we don’t really know much about Mario. Unlike so many current day video game characters there was no backstory into his life and what brought him to his current circumstances. It wasn’t needed though, as audiences and players connected with him immediately. Over the years all the different games have sold almost 275 million copies, that’s a serious fan base!
When you ask people why their favourite all-time game is Mario Bros. and their favourite character is Mario the answer is really quite simple. It has nothing to do with today’s flashy graphics, detailed storylines and hugely hyped action, what it has to do with is that the game was easy to understand and just plain fun. It’s one of those games you can play on your own or with a group of friends and just have a good time. Sometimes that’s all a videogame needs to be.
After the videogame was launched and enjoyed huge success the merchandise followed. Today you can find all kinds of items bearing the trademark Mario characters such as clothing, toys, bedding, bathroom products, food products, figurines, furnishings, stamps, ornaments, tattoos, computer items, electronic accessories, keychains . . . basically anything you can plaster a picture on! One might think the market is over-saturated but its not the case because the merchandise continues to sell and be popular with a huge span of age groups.
Mario – So Where Do We Go From Here?
It may seem as though Mario Bros. has already climbed so many mountains and set so many milestones but believe it or not, there is still plenty of places Mario can go and take its audience. Nintendo has no plans of giving up its popular franchise anytime soon. In fact it’s quite the opposite as it continues to release new versions on new Nintendo systems, ensuring the fan base continues to grow.
The New Super Mario Bros. U is getting a whole new approach from Nintendo. For this installment Nintendo is planning to sell additional courses/levels for New Super Mario Bros. U. Even though the levels have not been developed yet, work has begun and the plans are in place. It’s not yet clear what kind of levels they will be and how they will be packaged, but they will eventually be available to the public. The New Super Mario Bros. U is a game offered on Nintendo’s latest system – Wii U. The launch comes just in time for the Christmas shopping rush.
So with plenty of plans in the works, there is no need to be counting this lovable and revolutionary character out quite yet!
